LI = Weight ÷ RWL = In order to find the LI (Lifting Index) you need to know the weight of the load being lifted and you need the RWL for the lifting task. The LI will give you an indication of the level of risk associated with the lifting task. The higher the LI, the higher the risk of MSD or injuries.

NIOSH Lifting Equation - Calculating Recommended Weight Limit (... HM, the Horizontal Multiplier factor. VM, the Vertical Multiplier factor. DM, the Distance Multiplier factor. FM, the Frequency Multiplier factor. AM, the Asymmetric Multiplier factor. CM, the Coupling Multiplier factor. RWL, the Recommended Weight Limit.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Lifting Equation mobile application, NLE Calc, is a tool to calculate the overall risk index for single and multiple manual lifting tasks.

RWL = LC x HM x VM x DM x FM x AM x CM Calculating the RWL using this formula helps you determine which of the six components of the task contribute most to the risk. The multiplier factors have a value between 0 and 1. The lower the multiplier, the higher the risk, and therefore the lower the RWL to prevent injuries.

The Lifting Index (LI) is a term that provides a relative estimate of the level of physical stress associated with a particular manual lifting task. The Lifting Index is defined by the following equation : LI = Load Weight (L) ______ Recommended Weight Limit (RWL) Load Weight (L) = weight of the object lifted.

NIOSH Lifting Equation The maximum weight to be lifted with two hands, under ideal conditions, is 51 pounds. The RWL is based on six variables that reduce the maximum weight to be lifted to less than 51 pounds.

Simply, the NIOSH lifting equation measures whether the weight of the object is too heavy for the task. The goal is to design all lifting jobs to accomplish a Lifting Index (L1) of less than 1.0. The NIOSH Equation is used in the context of the Victorian Manual Handling Regulations and Codes of Practise.

The CLI (Composite Lifting Index) determines the additive affect of several tasks and is obtained by renumbering the tasks in decreasing order of physical difficulty as indicated by the STLI of each task.
