What is the difference between IDOC and CSS?

As opposed to the CSS Profile and the FAFSA which send a report of your information to colleges, IDOC allows you to submit those documents directly via a secure portal. If the IDOC is required, you'll be notified via your College Board account as to which documents need uploading.

The College utilizes the College Board's Institutional Documentation Service, known as IDOC (pronounced “eye-dok”) to receive and process the financial aid application materials that accompany the CSS Profile and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). There is no cost to students for the IDOC service.

Students who submit a CSS Profile to an institution or program that uses IDOC will receive an email about access to IDOC typically within 1-3 business days after submitting their CSS Profile.

IDOC is a service that collects family financial documents and distributes them to institutions on behalf of the student. We've built an interactive presentation to give you step-by-step instructions on how to use IDOC.

Schools that use IDOC will say so on their admissions website; as will the CSS Profile, many Ivy Leagues and other top schools require use IDOC. For example, Yale, Harvard, Dartmouth, CalTech, MIT, and Stanford all use both of these forms. College Board provides a full list of schools that use the CSS Profile or IDOC.
