What is the modified Barthel Index score?

The MBI developed by Shah et al. [5] is a 100-point rating scale of a patient's ability to perform 10 kinds of ADL. Each activity is assigned a numeric value ing to the patient's requirement for assistance. Lower scores indicate less independence, whereas higher scores indicate greater independence.

Each item is scored on a scale of 0 to 3, with 3 indicating normal performance and 0 representing severe impairment.

A Barthel score between 0 and 35 corresponds to a high risk, between 35 and 70 to a medium and over 75 to a low. Discussion: This study suggests that, by the use of only Barthel Index, it may be possible to identify patients who may have difficulty in early discharge.

The Barthel Index (BI) measures the extent to which somebody can function independently and has mobility in their activities of daily living (ADL) i.e. feeding, bathing, grooming, dressing, bowel control, bladder control, toileting, chair transfer, ambulation and stair climbing.

Total possible scores range from 0 – 20, with lower scores indicating increased disability. If used to measure improvement after rehabilitation, changes of more than two points in the total score reflect a probable genuine change, and change on one item from fully dependent to independent is also likely to be reliable.
