Fossils are an important source of information for finding the relative and absolute ages of rocks. Fossils also provide clues to past geologic events, climates, and the evolution of living things over time. Almost all fossils are discovered in sedimentary rock.

The fossil record certainly has gaps, mostly because the conditions required to create fossils have been rare ever since life began on Earth. A very small percentage of animals that have lived and died ever became fossils.

Most species that disappear today will leave no trace in the fossil record.

The fossils may consist of clues about the organism, such as its tracks or feces, or they may be a part of the organism, such as a bone or other body part. Fossils give scientists clues about the structure and lifestyle of the organisms.

The fossil record helps paleontologists, archaeologists, and geologists place important events and species in the appropriate geologic era. It is based on the Law of Superposition which states that in undisturbed rock sequences the bottom layers are older than the top layers.

The fossil record is considered to be incomplete because fossilization is a very rare phenomenon. Most organisms decompose quickly after their death, and their remains dispersed. In order for fossilization to occur, the remains have to be covered by sediments and stay undisturbed for thousands of years.

Along with other geological evidence from rocks and structures, fossils even give us clues about past climates, the motions of plates, and other major geological events. Since the present is the key to the past, what we know about a type of organism that lives today can be applied to past environments.
