How to Tie Up a Boat: Mooring Guide Plan your approach—consider wind direction and currents. Always start by tossing a spring line to someone on the dock. Secure a line from the bow cleat to a dock cleat forward of the boat. Secure the spring line to a dock cleat angled aft.

A standard mooring setup consists of 2 lengths of chain. Heavy ground chain on the bottom, connected to a lighter chain up top. Bottom chain length should be 1.5 times the maximum height of water (i.e., spring high tide). The heavy weight helps lay mushroom on its side.

Moorings and anchors are used to secure a vessel in a particular location. A mooring is something you can tie your vessel to. It may be a buoy, a marina berth pontoon or jetty. An anchorage is a place where you can stop and secure your vessel using its anchor.

Mooring parallel to the quay/bank To moor parallel alongside the quay or bank, place a crew member at mooring lines at the front and the back of the boat. Approach your chosen mooring spot slowly and keep the bow into the wind or the current; the boat should form an angle of around 45° with the bank.

You dock your boat at the dock, which is usually a flat walkway attached to pilings you can tie your docking line (rope) to. Once secured, your boat is docked. Tying your boat to the dock or to a permanently anchored float is known as mooring, and your boat when docked will be moored.

A weight of 5–10 times boat length is a good rule of thumb, as a bare minimum. The heavier the better, as long as you don't have to move it.

The “purchase of a mooring” requires knowing that the period of enjoyment of the right on it is not permanent, as well as the terms of use of it which may vary from one seascape to another. Once decided where to moor, depending on supply, it must be decided between the purchase of a preferential right of use or a rent.
