The census is conducted every ten years to provide an official count of the entire U.S. population to Congress. Your responses to both the American Community Survey and 2020 Census will also help provide local and national leaders with the information they need for planning and programs.

You may decline to answer any or all questions, but each item not answered lessens the quality of the final results. The Census Bureau field representatives need to interview every home in the survey sample to get a complete picture of the housing situation across the country.

Your household or business may be selected to participate in a survey. The U.S. Census Bureau randomly selected your household or business through a process of scientific sampling. We collect information from a smaller group to produce estimates for the entire population.

By census law, refusal to answer all or part of the census carries a $100 fine. The penalty goes up to $500 for giving false answers.

Why did I receive another letter or postcard about this? If you have already responded to the 2023 Census Test, the reminder may have been sent before we received your response.

If your address was selected to participate in one of these surveys, we may call you to participate. Some surveys are done exclusively by phone. We might also call you if we do not find you at home or when a personal visit is not convenient.

Response to the survey is required by law because the American Community Survey is part of the decennial census, replacing the "long form" that previously was sent to a percentage of households once every 10 years.

By phone. Several surveys, such as the American Time Use Survey, are conducted by phone. The Census Bureau uses publicly available telephone directories to call survey participants. Because we are contacting you on official government business, the Census Bureau is not subject to the “Do Not Call” list restrictions.

What questions am I going to be asked? The 2020 Census survey will ask the name, sex, age, date of birth, race/ethnicity, and relationship of everyone in your household. It will also ask if you rent or own your home.

A person may have filled out more than one Census form and the Census Bureau did not catch the duplicate forms from the same household. Another reason is that some individuals might own two homes, living part of the year in one place and part of the year in another, and may have filled out two Census forms.
