Prior to this period, American politics was dominated by a few aristocratic families. Jacksonian democracy, however, introduced practices such as the two-party system and the spoils system, and expanded voting rights to all white males.

Andrew Jackson believed that that expanding economic opportunity and political means for the "common man" would make the United States more of a Democracy than it was at that time.

Jackson's Indian policy Jackson early on established himself as a champion of the white settler against the interests of Native Americans. As president, Jackson instituted his pro-white sentiment in a series of policies that culminated with the forced removal of Native Americans from their native lands.

Jackson became the first president whose home state was not Massachusetts or Virginia. He believed in having a small but strong federal government and held that every man (or woman) should be self-made, toil the earth and rely on his (or her) own independence.

Jacksonian Democrats portrayed themselves as the party of the “common man”. They claimed to be the guardians of the US Constitution, political democracy, individual liberty, and equality of economic opportunity.

Such tendentious revisionism may provide a useful corrective to older enthusiastic assessments, but it fails to capture a larger historical tragedy: Jacksonian Democracy was an authentic democratic movement, dedicated to powerful, at times radical, egalitarian ideals—but mainly for white men.

Belko, in 2015, summarized "the core concepts underlying Jacksonian Democracy" as: equal protection of the laws; an aversion to a moneyed aristocracy, exclusive privileges, and monopolies, and a predilection for the common man; majority rule; and the welfare of the community over the individual.

The party favors a mixed economy and generally supports a progressive tax system, higher minimum wages, Social Security, universal health care, public education, and subsidized housing. It also supports infrastructure development and clean energy investments to achieve economic development and job creation.
