Each agency must administer a voluntary leave transfer program for its employees.

You've earned it – Use your leave or lose it Typically, if you have accrued more than two months of unused leave, you lose any amount that exceeds 60 days at the end of the fiscal year, Sept. 30. A service member may be authorized to carry over more than 60 days of leave for a period of time.

A leave year begins on the first day of the first full biweekly pay period in a calendar year, and ends on the day immediately before the first day of the first full biweekly pay period in the following calendar year. For most federal employees, the 2023 leave year ends on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024.
