cDNA (short for copy DNA; also called complementary DNA) is synthetic DNA that has been transcribed from a specific mRNA through a reaction using the enzyme reverse transcriptase. While DNA is composed of both coding and non-coding sequences, cDNA contains only coding sequences.

They also use cDNA libraries to identify genes that are expressed differently in different types of tissues or at different developmental stages. Libraries of cDNA molecules provide snapshots of gene activity, because only those genes that are actually expressed and transcribed into mRNA molecules can be cloned.

cDNA is complementary DNA that is synthesized from mRNA (messenger RNA). It is useful for cloning and expressing specific genes. Scientists can also create cDNA libraries, enabling them to study sequences specific to a given tissue and develop shareable databases.

cDNA clones are copies of mRNAs. Construction of cDNA clones involves the synthesis of complementary DNA from mRNA and then inserting a duplex copy of that into a cloning vector, followed by transformation of bacteria (Figure 3.6. 1).

In molecular biology, complementary DNA (cDNA) is synthesised from an RNA template in a reaction catalysed by the enzyme reverse transcriptase (RTase). cDNA synthesis is the first step in many molecular biology workflows, such as gene expression studies using real-time PCR.

One such technique is cDNA cloning. The principle behind this technique is that an mRNA population isolated from a specific developmental stage should contain mRNAs specific for any protein expressed during that stage. Thus, if the mRNA can be isolated, the gene can be studied.
