Wall Insulation The residential requirements for wall insulation in Miami homes are determined based on the wall's location: Framed walls: Insulation must meet or exceed R-13. Interior block walls: Insulation must meet or exceed R-7.8. Exterior block walls: Insulation must meet or exceed R-6.

Typical recommendations for exterior walls are R-13 to R-23, while R-30, R-38 and R-49 are common for ceilings and attic spaces. See the Department of Energy's (DOE) ranges for recommended levels of insulation below.

Climate Zone 1 consists of the following south Florida counties: Broward, Collier, Hendry, Lee, Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Palm Beach, and require a minimum R-30 attic insulation. All other Florida counties are considered to be in Climate Zone 2 and require a minimum R-38.

Other insulation requirements in Florida include the following: Framed wall insulation – at least R13. Interior insulation in block walls – at least R7. 8.

Sacramento and most of California are in Zone 3, which requires attic insulation with an R-value between 30 and 60. On this chart, each part of the country is divided into different zones and each zone has a recommended R-value.
