If you receive mortgage interest of $600 or more in the course of your trade or business, you are subject to the requirement to file Form 1098, even if you are not in the business of lending money.

You can download your 1098-E from your servicer's website. (You can't download your 1098-E from StudentAid.gov.) If you're not sure who your loan servicer is, you can log in to StudentAid.gov to get your servicer's contact information. You can also call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243.

The 1098 form and its variants are used to report certain contributions and other possible tax-deductible expenses to the IRS and taxpayers. In particular, they cover mortgage interest payments; contributions of motor vehicles, boats, or airplanes; student loan interest paid; and tuition and scholarship information.

The Form 1098-T is a form provided to you and the IRS by an eligible educational institution that reports, among other things, amounts paid for qualified tuition and related expenses. The form may be useful in calculating the amount of the allowable education tax credits.

The 1098-T, Tuition Statement form reports tuition expenses you paid for college tuition that might entitle you to an adjustment to income or a tax credit. Information on the 1098-T is available from the IRS at Form 1098-T, Tuition Statement.

If you claim a dependent, only you can claim the education credit. Therefore, you would enter Form 1098-T and the dependent's other education information in your return. If you do not claim a dependent, the student can claim the education credit.

Form 1098-T, Tuition Statement reports the amount of qualified education expenses paid by the student during the tax year. Your 1098-T may qualify you for education-related tax benefits like the American Opportunity Credit, Lifetime Learning Credit, or the Tuition and Fees Deduction.
