STREAM STAR WARS ON DISNEY+ An injured Luke awoke to find himself upside-down in the wampa's lair, his feet frozen into the cavern ceiling. Luke used the Force to call his lightsaber to his hand, cut himself free, and severed the wampa's arm with a quick stroke.

Because he was injured, disoriented, and knew that the Wampa was still there and might not be alone. He had the ogre's choice before him: face an injured and pissed off Wampa and possibly its family too, or face the cold of Hoth's night and possibly freeze to death.

The wampa attack on Luke Skywalker near the beginning of The Empire Strikes Back did not originate as a straightforward George Lucas plot device, but as a Star Wars in-universe explanation for a real-life predicament.

The wampa melted the ice with its breath and covered Luke's feet in saliva, which then froze and left him stuck to the ceiling of the cave.

A wampa attacked Luke Skywalker outside Echo Base, killing Luke's tauntaun and dragging the rebel commander away. An injured Luke awoke to find himself upside-down in the wampa's lair, his feet frozen into the cavern ceiling.

Luke used the Force to pull his lightsaber from the ice and cut himself free, and escaped with a facial scar and bruises. In the process, the wampa lost her arm when Skywalker used his weapon to fend it off.

For some, wampas used their hot breath to melt the ice around a victim's legs and then coated parts of the body in saliva, placing them against the ice ceiling of their caves so they would freeze in place.

As the wampa devoured tauntaun meat, Skywalker was eventually able to regain consciousness and free himself using his lightsaber, slicing off the wampa's right arm just before it could strike him. The wampa eventually recovered enough strength to venture out of its cave once more.
