What was significant about the Battle of Yorktown? It proved to be the last battle of the Revolutionary War. It was also the surrender of the British (General Cornwallis).

Virginia | Sep 28 - Oct 19, 1781. The Battle of Yorktown proved to be the decisive engagement of the American Revolution. The British surrender forecast the end of British rule in the colonies and the birth of a new nation—the United States of America.

Yorktown was established by Virginia's colonial government in 1691 to regulate trade and to collect taxes on both imports and exports for Great Britain. By the early 1700s, Yorktown had emerged as a major Virginia port and economic center. A well-developed waterfront boasted wharves, docks, storehouses and businesses.

The Americans and French marched to Yorktown on September 28 and began digging a trench 800 yards from the British defense line. Washington's strategy was to dig trenches through which he could move his heavy guns close enough to Yorktown to pound Cornwallis into surrender. “Yorktown, 14 October 1781” by H.

On October 19, 1781, British General Charles Cornwallis surrendered his army of some 8,000 men to General George Washington at Yorktown, giving up any chance of winning the Revolutionary War.

The combined effort by the American forces and French Navy were critical. Geography contributed to the overall victory at Yorktown because again, the body of water served as another line of defense. The French Navy was able to cut off the escape route the British would have needed to prolong the war.

On September 26, transports with artillery, siege tools, and some French infantry and shock troops from Head of Elk, the northern end of the Chesapeake Bay, arrived, giving Washington command of an army of 7,800 Frenchmen, 3,100 militia, and 8,000 Continentals.

Supported by the French army and navy, Washington's forces defeated Lord Charles Cornwallis' veteran army dug in at Yorktown, Virginia. Victory at Yorktown led directly to the peace negotiations that ended the war in 1783 and gave America its independence.
