The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has recommended that all worker exposures to noise should be controlled below a level equivalent to 85 dBA for eight hours to minimize occupational noise induced hearing loss.

A hearing test is also recommended when the employee is leaving the post. Noise Induced Hearing Loss is a prescribed disease, and is reportable under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 (HSE, 1995), otherwise known as RIDDOR.

Occupational noise-induced hearing loss (ONIHL) is a common occupational disease. Since the eighteenth century, reports have noted that copper miners experienced hearing loss due to the noise exposure from hammering on metal [3, 4].

What causes Occupational Hearing Loss (OHL)? OHL can occur when workers are exposed to loud noise or ototoxic chemicals. Noise is considered loud (hazardous) when it reaches 85 decibels or higher, or if a person has to raise his/her voice to speak with someone 3 feet away (arm's length).
