Hot work means work involving electric or gas welding, cutting, brazing, or similar flame or spark-producing operations (§68.3). Facilities that perform hot work operations conducted on or near a covered process shall issue a hot work permit, and it must be kept on file until hot work operations are completed.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommend at least 35 ft (10.7 m) of distance between hot work and flammable vapors.

The purpose of a hot work program is to ensure appropriate safeguards are in place to prevent a fire from non-routine work involving open flames, sparks or heat. Typical non-routine hot work includes but is not limited to brazing, cutting, grinding, soldering, torch applied roof, welding and thawing pipe.

Definition. "Hot work" means riveting, welding, flame cutting or other fire or spark-producing operation. 1917.152(b) Hot work in confined spaces. Hot work shall not be performed in a confined space until a designated person has tested the atmosphere and determined that it is not hazardous.

Working with ignition sources near flammable materials is referred to as "hot work." Welding, soldering and cutting are examples of hot work.
