The AAIB's purpose is “…to improve aviation safety globally by determining the causes of air accidents and serious incidents, and making safety recommendations intended to prevent recurrence.

To effectively discover the hazards that led to the accident and to prevent their recurrence in a future accident or incident. In the course of that investigation, additional hazards which increased damage and injury (inadequate crashworthy systems, system safeguards, rescue team response, etc.)

The NTSB has primary authority to investigate every civil aviation accident in the United States; the agency is also authorized to conduct investigations involving both civilian and military aircraft "with the participation of appropriate military authorities".
