Medicare is the best health insurance option for seniors and retirees. For those age 65 and older or who have a qualifying disability, the Medicare program will be the cheapest health insurance with the best benefits. When you were working, you paid into the Medicare program via a Medicare tax on income.

We provide benefits to more than 100,000 federal and postal employees and their families in Massachusetts through the Federal Employee Program (FEP). Members have the choice of three preferred provider organization (PPO) medical plans—Standard Option, Basic Option, and FEP Blue Focus—and a dental supplement plan.

FEHB premiums are not reduced if you enroll in Medicare, but having Medicare Part A and B can allow you to switch to a less expensive version of your current FEHB plan, because some FEHB insurers waive cost-sharing (like deductibles, co-pays and coinsurance) when you have Medicare Parts A and B.

The FEP membership cards are identified by coverage codes 104, 105, and 106 for the Standard Option and 111, 112, and 113 for the Basic Option. FEP Blue Focus enrollment codes are 131, 132 and 133. Basic Option members must use preferred providers for all medical care (with some exceptions, such as emergency care).

Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Program http://.opm.gov/healthcare- insurance/healthcare/ FEHB provides comprehensive health insurance. You can choose from fee-for-service plans, health maintenance organizations, consumer-driven plans and high deductible health plans.

Because all FEHB Program plans have as good or better coverage than Medicare, they are considered to offer creditable coverage. So, if you decide not to join a Medicare drug plan now, but change your mind later and you are still enrolled in FEHB, you can do so without paying a late enrollment penalty.

The Government Accountability Office says that in 2015, Blue Cross-Blue Shield was the primary insurance carrier for federal workers and retirees in most of the nation's counties.

As long as you are still actively working, FEP will be your primary coverage and Medicare late enrollment penalties will not apply. Once you retire, you'll have 8 months to enroll in Medicare Part B before the penalty kicks in.
