Background: Chronic motion sensitivity (CMS) has been defined as a feeling of un-wellness elicited by either actual or perceived motion. CMS is a common condition and is more prevalent in females than in males.

Motion sensitivity is characterized by nausea, dizziness, and imbalance in response to motion of the visual environment [1]. It can develop as a sequela of a vestibular disorder and is one of the diagnostic criteria for persistent postural perceptual dizziness [1-3].

Motion sickness is usually treated with behavioral and pharmaceutical approaches. Behavioral therapy reduces motion sickness sensitivity by exposing subjects to stimuli that had caused stressful motion sickness. Over time subjects become habituated and sensitivity decreases.

Motion sensitivity can be caused by many factors including can be caused by many factors such as poor circulation, inner ear disease, medication usage, injury, infection, allergies, and/or neurological disease.

Motion sensitivity is characterized by nausea, dizziness, and imbalance in response to motion of the visual environment [1]. It can develop as a sequela of a vestibular disorder and is one of the diagnostic criteria for persistent postural perceptual dizziness [1-3].

But a recent study from Britain's University of Warwick suggests that we can “train our brains” to be far less susceptible to motion sickness with the help of simple visuospatial exercises. Visuospatial ability refers to the capacity to identify visual and spatial relationships among objects.

The MST was found to be reliable across raters (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] = 0.99) and test sessions (ICC = 0.98 and 0.96). Test validity was good.

The MST quotient equals the number of positions that provoked symptoms times the intensity and duration total for all positions divided by 2,048. In the formula, 2,048 = 16 (total number of positions) × 128 (total possible MST raw score). One can then calculate a percentage score by multiplying by 100.
