Fish, like all other living organisms, can be infected by virus representatives from most of the virus families. Predominantly described as fish pathogens, these viruses include rhabdoviruses, birnaviruses, herpesviruses, iridoviruses, reoviruses, orthomyxoviruses and retroviruses.

Iridovirus is a double stranded DNA virus of the Irdoviridae family. The main pathogen is the Megalocytivirus. This is further composed of infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV) and red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV). Iridovirus can also cause immunosuppression, which makes fish susceptible to other diseases.

Adenoviruses are a group of viruses that typically cause respiratory illnesses, such as a common cold, conjunctivitis (an infection in the eye that is sometimes called pink eye), croup, bronchitis, or pneumonia. In children, adenoviruses usually cause infections in the respiratory tract and intestinal tract.

Iridoviruses are nonoccluded viruses with a linear double-stranded DNA genome that produce large, icosahedral virions (125 to 200 nm) that replicate in the cytoplasm of a wide range of tissues in infected hosts, causing disease that is generally fatal.

Invertebrate iridoviruses may be transmitted by cannibalism, endoparasitic wasps or parasitic nematodes. Viruses may be transmitted experimentally by injection or bath immersion, and naturally by co-habitation, feeding, or wounding.
