The duodecimal numeral system, or dozenal is a place-value notation using the powers of 12 rather than the powers of 10. In addition to using the digits 0 to 9, two additional digits are needed: the usual choice is the Latin letters A and B.

Louis Public Library, the Dewey system was first formulated by the American librarian Melvil Dewey in 1873 for application in the Amherst College Library. It was first published in 1876, and the 20th edition of the system had been published by the late 20th century.

The duodecimal system (also known as base 12, dozenal, or, rarely, uncial) is a positional notation numeral system using twelve as its base.

Base 3, on the other hand, does have a genuine mathematical distinction in its favor. By one plausible measure, it is the most efficient of all integer bases; it offers the most economical way of representing numbers.

The duodecimal system as a developed positional system of numerals does not appear historically. However, ancient Egyptians, Babylonians and Chinese used duodecimal units in astronomical and time keeping matters. From Scientific American: "As early as 1500 B.C., the Egyptians had developed a more advanced sundial.

The undecimal numeral system (also known as the base-11 numeral system) is a positional numeral system that uses eleven as its base.

The Mayans used a vigesimal (base 20) number system, the Babylonians used a sexagesimal (base 60) number system, and the Egyptians used a duo-decimal (base 12) number system. It is believed that the Mayans used base 20 because they lived in a warm climate where they did not wear shoes, thus giving 20 fingers and toes.

Ok, but how does it work? The duodecimal system is composed by 12 digits, from 0 to 9, and then two additional digits used to represent 10, and 11. These are Ⅹ, and Ɛ, namely “dek”, and “el”. So, counting the process of counting to 12 works like this: 0, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, Ⅹ, Ɛ, 10.
