In cathodic protection remote monitoring, RMUs are commonly used to monitor, and in most cases control the performance of rectifiers in impressed current cathodic protection systems. We also apply RMUs to test stations, critical bonds and other monitoring applications.

For annual CP surveys, the voltage and current outputs of the rectifiers are measured using a voltmeter. The voltage is measured across the output terminals of the rectifier. The current output of the rectifier is determined by measuring the voltage drop across a shunt on the rectifier panel.

Inspection and Testing: All underground storage tank systems equipped with cathodic protection must be inspected for proper operation by a qualified cathodic protection tester within six (6) months of installation or repair of the UST system, and at least every three (3) years thereafter.

The criterion for cathodic protection is a voltage shift of at least 0.10 volt from the initial reading after the power to the rectifier is cut off. For example, a system might have a voltage of -1.1 volts with the power to the rectifier turned on.

Cathodic protection monitoring involves regular inspections performed by pipeline operators to perform measurements at rectifiers and cathodic protection test points along a pipeline. Increasingly, automated options using satellites, cell phones or drone systems are used for remote inspections.
