Chromosomes are coiled structures made of DNA and proteins. Chromosomes form after DNA replicates; prior to replication, DNA exists as chromatin. Chromosomes contain genes, which code for proteins.

During every cell division, a cell must duplicate its chromosomal DNA through a process called DNA replication. The duplicated DNA is then segregated into two "daughter" cells that inherit the same genetic information. This process is called chromosome segregation.

Chromatid A chromatid is one of the two identical halves of a chromosome that has been replicated in preparation for cell division. The two “sister” chromatids are joined at a constricted region of the chromosome called the centromere.

Hence though DNA and chromosomal replication are one and the same, we use the former phrase frequently.

Chromosome Replication and Segregation To reproduce successfully, every cell must replicate its chromosome(s) and distinguish nascent sister chromosomes from one another. Each sister chromosome must then be physically segregated into one of two new cells prior to completion of cell division.

At the end of this process, once the DNA is all replicated, the cell actually has twice the amount of DNA that it needs, and the cell can then divide and parcel this DNA into the daughter cell, so that the daughter cell and the parental cell in many case are absolutely genetically identical.

After DNA replication, each chromosome now consists of two physically attached sister chromatids. After chromosome condensation, the chromosomes condense to form compact structures (still made up of two chromatids). As a cell prepares to divide, it must make a copy of each of its chromosomes.

Definition. DNA replication is the process by which the genome's DNA is copied in cells. Before a cell divides, it must first copy (or replicate) its entire genome so that each resulting daughter cell ends up with its own complete genome.

Then, at a critical point during interphase (called the S phase), the cell duplicates its chromosomes and ensures its systems are ready for cell division.

Key Points. During initiation, proteins bind to the origin of replication while helicase unwinds the DNA helix and two replication forks are formed at the origin of replication. During elongation, a primer sequence is added with complementary RNA nucleotides, which are then replaced by DNA nucleotides.
