The Safety Code for Elevators ASME A17. 1-2022, as a code, is intended to provide safety of life and limb and promote public welfare. It covers not only elevators, escalators, moving walks, dumbwaiters, material lifts, and related equipment, but also their associated parts, rooms, spaces, and hoistways.

All elevators covered by Chapter 399, F.S., must be in compliance with part 3.10. 12 of ASME A17. 3- 2015, Safety Code for Existing Elevators and Escalators by December 31, 2023.

Elevator code is governed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Formally dubbed the A17 Life Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, A17 is the basis for most requirements adopted at the local level.

Generally, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) law calls for an elevator to be installed if your building has three or more stories, or if each floor of the building exceeds 3,000 square feet.

1 (or CSA B44) is the safety code for elevators. To facilitate compliance with elevator inspections, there's ASME A17.

California Elevator Code Authority The California Department of Industrial Relations oversees all elevators in the State. Annual Inspections (Reinspections) Are the Responsibility of the Elevator Owner and State safety inspection is a multipurpose activity.

Section 399.13 F.S. allows Florida's Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) to contract with local governments to inspect elevators and enforce applicable provisions of the Florida Building Code.
