Description. This lab requires students to combine two chemicals in a double displacement reaction in order to produce exactly 2.00 grams of solid product. So, the pre-lab reinforces stoichiometric math and the actual lab helps students conceptualize the usefulness of stoichiometry.

Stoichiometry is a section of chemistry that involves using relationships between reactants and/or products in a chemical reaction to determine desired quantitative data. In Greek, stoikhein means element and metron means measure, so stoichiometry literally translated means the measure of elements.

Materials and Equipment Solid sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), 6M hydrochloric acid (HCl), electronic balance, evaporating dish, watch glass (to fit as a cover for the evaporating dish), stand and ring clamp, wire gauze, dropper pipette, stir rod and Bunsen burner.

Stoichiometry is the study of quantitative relationships in chemical reactions. A balanced chemical reaction equation gives the mole ratios of the reactants and the products as coefficients. When some of the chemical formulas are not known, an experiment can be conducted to help determine the mole ratios.

Purpose. The purpose of this lab is to predict the theoretical yield of a product of a chemical reaction using stoichiometric calculations, then compare the theoretical yield of the product to the actual yield when the reaction is done in the lab.
