Ans. Both are based on the life of Lord Ram but the main difference between the two is their Author and the time when they were written. Ramayana was written by Sage Valmiki in Treta Yuga. Whereas, Ramcharitmanas was written by Tulsidas in Kaliyuga.

In its extant form, Valmiki's Ramayana is an epic poem of some 24,000 verses, divided into seven kāṇḍas (Bālakāṇḍa, Ayodhyakāṇḍa, Araṇyakāṇḍa, Kiṣkindakāṇḍa, Sundarākāṇḍa, Yuddhakāṇḍa, Uttarakāṇḍa), and about 500 sargas (chapters).

In all, there are 25 Sanskrit Ramayanas. One of the earliest vernacular Ramayanas is Kamban's Tamil epic written in the 9th or 12th Century. There are many tribal versions including the famous Bhil Ramayana.

The oldest version is generally recognized to be the Sanskrit version attributed to the sage Narada, the Mula Ramayana. Narada passed on the knowledge to Valmiki, who authored Valmiki Ramayana, the present oldest available version of Ramayana.

The Valmiki Ramayana remains a living force in the lives of the Indian people. A timeless epic, it recounts the legend of the noble prince Rama and his battle to vanquish the demon king Ravana.

While Valmiki's version is recognised as the original one, over 300 Ramayana versions are known to exist, especially in South East Asia, when around the 12th and 13th centuries, the region received and imbibed many of the cultural traits, along with goods and services, travelling from Indian shores.

The holy book has to be recited facing east or north in the morning and west or north in the evening. During other hours, the ritual has to be done facing north. A devotee has to sit cross-legged on the floor while reciting Ramayana.
