Judge Horton and Judge Taylor both presided over the cases. Judge Horton was the second of three judges in the Scottsboro cases, and Judge Taylor was the fictional judge in To Kill a Mockingbird. The two both exhibited undeniable sympathy to the defendants in the cases.

Her father, Amasa Lee, is an attorney who served in the state legislature in Alabama. Her older brother and young neighbor (Truman Capote) are playmates. Harper Lee is an avid reader as a child. She is 6 years old when the Scottsboro trials are widely covered in national, state and local newspapers.

Since its publication in 1960, To Kill a Mockingbird has paid witness to similar racial injustice. Parallels can be made between the fictional trial of Tom Robinson and the historical Scottsboro Boys case trials, which Harper Lee drew upon as inspiration for the novel.

In November 2013, more than eighty years after the conviction of the Scottsboro Boys, the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles granted posthumous pardons to Charlie Weems, Andy Wright and Haywood Patterson in order to formally exonerate them as well.

Tom Robinson was considered a mockingbird because he was slaughtered for doing nothing but trying to live his life. Atticus tells the kids that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird bird because they do no harm to anyone. They are slaughtered by children and hunters for just living jusut as Tom Robinson was.

Their trials began 12 days after the alleged crime and, despite ample evidence that they were innocent, eight of the nine were found guilty by all-white juries and sentenced to death in the electric chair.

Both Tom Robinson and Haywood Patterson were wrongfully arrested and charged with rape, thus, both individual's experience in prison could be considered to be similar in the aspect of a black man being wrongfully accused and racially profiled while in prison.
