There is no legal requirement for a trust to prepare financial statements but some trust deeds include such an obligation along with other unnecessary requirements such as that the trustees must meet at least once a year to consider the financial statements.

However, if the trust receives any assessable income, eg, interest, the trustee must file a return, regardless of the amount derived. If the trust subsequently derives assessable income in a future year, the trust must send in a return. This only applies to trust returns.
