The Division of Victim Services handles all special requests by those victims of crime who are registered with the Agency. Types of special requests include, but are not limited to, requests to block personal telephone numbers from being dialed by inmates and also requests to block inmates from sending unwanted mail.

Victim Service Providers must complete an approved 15-hour basic core training within one year of their date of employment in order to become a certified Victim Service Provider. VSPs must complete 12 hours of approved continuing education each calendar year to remain certified.

The program requires 15 hours of undergraduate work. Courses are offered by the Criminal Justice Department, the College of Nursing, the Sociology Department, and the School of Social Work. Certificates will be awarded only at the time of degree completion.

Most individuals interested in victim advocate careers will usually need to get a formal education. This usually involves earning at least an associate's or a bachelor's degree in social work, criminal justice, psychology, or victimology. Some victim advocates might also earn graduate degrees in these areas as well.
