A footnote appears at the bottom of the page, and an endnote appears at the end of a document. Both references are created similarly. There's no need to type the note's number, it's done automatically.

Probably the most common reason for this is that the page margins are set to narrow to accommodate the footnotes. The other item to check is the document's footnote settings. You have to make sure that the format you're using is set to show the footnotes.

To change the formatting of the footnote numbers, select the Footnotes Reference Style. If you want to change the formatting of the footnote text at the bottom of the page, select the Footnote Text Style. Click Modify, and then change the formatting options (font, size, and so on).

Switch to Draft view (View > Draft) and then click Show Notes on the References tab. You should then see the footnotes in a separate pane. If the Show Notes command is greyed out, the document doesn't contain any footnotes.
