Under NHTSA's regulations, each motor vehicle must contain a vehicle identification number, also known as a VIN, which is a 17-character number that encodes specific information about the particular vehicle. On NHTSA.gov, you can query a particular vehicle's VIN to identify specific information encoded in the number.

VIN Verifications may be obtained at any Air Care Colorado inspection station. If your vehicle requires an emissions inspection, simply let the inspector know that you need a VIN verification as well as an inspection.

In addition to the registration or title, a VIN verification is a physical inspection of the vehicle to verify that the vehicle identification number on the vehicle matches the vehicle's registration or title document.

Vehicle identification number (VIN) verifications are required to register some motor vehicles. Certain vehicle types require a VIN verification to be done at a DMV Inspection Lane – see locations and hours — and others must be done at a VIN verification test center.

You can receive a VIN Verification at any Emissions Testing location, Colorado dealership, or by contacting your local law enforcement agency. A VIN Verification is not the same as a Certified VIN Inspection. In some cases, a Certified VIN Inspection is required.

A Certified VIN Inspection is more in-depth than a VIN Verification and requires the completion of this form provided by the Colorado Department of Revenue. The following are some examples that MAY require a Certified VIN: Bonded Title Vehicles. Rebuilt Vehicle.

On the driver's side dashboard – stand outside the vehicle and look at the corner where the dashboard meets the windshield. In the driver's side door or door jamb – the VIN is usually printed on a sticker in that location.

Vehicle registrations are available digitally in the myColorado™ app. It's a convenient, secure way to ensure that your registration is accessible. From the Wallet tab, tap Vehicle Registrations.
