There are eight major terrestrial biomes: tropical rainforests, savannas, deserts, chaparral, temperate grasslands, temperate forests, taiga (boreal forests), and Arctic tundra.

Terrestrial biomes are the ecosystems found in a similar climatic pattern in a region that need not be located in proximity but span across the earth. An example of a terrestrial ecosystem is tropical forests. The various types of biome in the terrestrial terrain are forests, grasslands, deserts, and tundra.

This chapter describes some of the major terrestrial biomes in the world; tropical forests, savannas, deserts, temperate grasslands, temperate deciduous forests, Mediterranean scrub, coniferous forests, and tundra (Figure 4).

There are three main climate zones on Earth that help form our biomes – Tropical, Temperate, and Polar. Tropical zones are near the equator. They get the most direct sunlight for 12-hours a day all year round. They are where you find the hottest biomes.

Regions of similar climate and dominant plant types are called biomes. This chapter describes some of the major terrestrial biomes in the world; tropical forests, savannas, deserts, temperate grasslands, temperate deciduous forests, Mediterranean scrub, coniferous forests, and tundra (Figure 4).

The biomes are colour-coded key: temperate broadleaf forest (red); coniferous forest (blue); temperate grassland (orange); Mediterranean (bright yellow); tropical rainforest (dark green); desert (pale yellow); tundra (dark pink); tropical grassland (light green); mountains (purple); and polar (white).

The three major forest biomes are temperate forests, tropical forests, and boreal forests (also known as the taiga). These forest types occur at different latitudes, and therefore experience different climatic conditions. Tropical forests are warm, humid, and found close to the equator.
