The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) found that exposure could be reduced through the use of engineering controls, including the use of local exhaust ventilation to capture dust at its source and the use of water sprays to suppress dust where it is produced.

It's found in soil, sand, granite, concrete, rock, and many other materials. Cutting, chipping, grinding, and drilling these materials creates a lot of dust, which contains tiny crystalline silica particles. This airborne silica dust can easily be breathed in, causing a major health hazard for exposed workers.

Wash your hands and face before eating, drinking, smoking, or applying cosmetics outside of the exposure area. If using respirators, do not alter the respirator in any way.

Engineering controls protect workers by removing hazardous conditions or by placing a barrier between the worker and the hazard. Examples include local exhaust ventilation to capture and remove airborne emissions or machine guards to shield the worker.

The action level for respirable crystalline silica is 25 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/M3) of air.

A description of the procedures used to restrict access to work areas, when necessary, to minimize the number of employees exposed to Respirable Crystalline Silica and their level of exposure, including exposures generated by other employers or sole proprietors.

The minimum respiratory protection for a worker who is working with crystalline silica dust, but is not doing abrasive-blasting, may be an N95 NIOSH-approved respirator. However, the exposure to crystalline silica must not exceed the assigned protection factor of the respirator.

Examples of work practices to control silica exposures include wetting down dust before sweeping it up or using the water flow rate recommended by the manufacturer for a tool with water controls. Respirators are only allowed when engineering and work practice controls cannot maintain exposures at or below the PEL.

Yale University's written Crystalline Silica Exposure Control Plan is designed to prevent health effects from respirable crystalline silica exposures.
