There is no official limit for the number of hours that a 16- or 17-year-old can work each week when school is not in session in Ohio. Minors who are 16 and 17 do not need a work permit for a summer job and do not have the same restrictions on hours.

Age certificates serve as proof of age. They are typically issued to workers age 16 and older. Proof of age is often requested by an employer as part of the hiring process when the job requires that the worker be 16 or older. (Code of Virginia § 40.1-104).

While minors as young as age 14 are able to work in the state of Ohio, youth under the age of 18 are required to obtain a working permit, also known in Ohio as an age and schooling certificate, prior to doing so. The employer should not allow a minor to begin employment without their providing this document.

Certificate of Age (for 16- and 17-year-old minors) No promise of a job is needed to obtain this certificate. The minor will be issued a Certificate of Age to use until age 18. There are no restrictions on hours except when the minor is required to be in school.

A birth certificate, passport, driver's license, State issued identification, or parent's oath as to the minor's age are acceptable proofs of age under the child labor law.

8 hours of work per day, 40 per week are permitted when school is off. During a school week, 3 hours of work are permitted per day and up to 18 hours per week. For Minors Ages 16 and 17: Ohio has no restrictions on maximum working hours for minors aged 16 and 17.

WORKING PERMITS: Every minor 14 through 17 years of age must have a working permit unless otherwise stated in Chapter 4109.

During summer months when school is not in session, 16 and 17 year old minors are not required to obtain work permits, provided that the employer maintains proof of age and a signed statement from their parent or guardian consent to their proposed employment.
