Miss Strangeworth sends anonymous poison pen letters to her neighbors because she feels superior to them due to belonging to the Strangeworth family that founded the town.

Miss Adela Strangeworth, a character in the short story “The Possibility of Evil” by Shirley Jackson, is a 71-year-old spinster living in a small town in the 1940's. At the beginning, she seems like any normal old lady, but it is quickly realized that this is not the case and that she has a dark side.

In the short story "The Possibility of Evil," the narration is done in the third-person. The narrator is not a character in the story and never interacts with the townspeople, refers to characters by name, and uses third-person pronouns. The story is also a great example of a limited point of view.

Miss Strangeworth: An old woman who has been in "her" town for a log time and writes cruel letters to people anonymously. She is a round character and could be either static or dynamic. "She began to cry silently for the wickedness of the world when she read the words 'LOOK OUT AT WHAT USED TO BE YOUR ROSES. '"

Miss Strangeworth is described prominently as a harmless old lady in the beginning of the story. Through conversations with the people in her town, it is evident that Miss Strangeworth often believes that she owns the town, never having left it for longer than a day, and has great interest in its townspeople.

The next morning Miss Strangeworth receives a letter saying, “Look at what used to be your roses.” This event sums up the whole theme of the story. Her favorite part of life is ruined in return for destroying others' lives. Irony is what makes this story as interesting as it is.

In the short story “The Possibility of Evil” written by Shirley Jackson, the protagonist Ms. Strangeworth is a villain because she isn't what everyone's aspect of her is, she is very deceptive, and the letters she sends are the very cause of the evil she's trying to stop.
