We recommend teaching FORMAL grammar beginning in 4th or 5th grade. We want students to be good readers and have the ability to do some multi-step analytical thinking.

Topics include comparing numbers, adding and subtracting with regrouping, rounding, estimating and word problems. Adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers, mentally and in columns, within 1-1,000. Includes regrouping tens as hundreds and regrouping across zeros.

Reading comprehension refers to the ability to understand what one reads. It is the ultimate goal of reading instruction. ( Definition from University of Oregon) In third grade, readers answer questions citing evidence from the text.

Third grade reading focuses on teaching kids how to think and talk about what they read in deeper and more detailed ways. Students read longer texts, and most read fictional chapter books. Many reading lessons in 3rd grade are dedicated to writing and talking about the meanings, lessons, and important ideas in texts.

Students should know the four main types of sentences: declarative (statement), interrogative (question), imperative (command), and exclamatory (excited), as well as the 8 main parts of speech (noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction and interjection).
