There are three main categories of hazardous waste: characteristic wastes, mixed wastes, and listed wastes. Listed wastes are noted on the F, K, P, and U-lists.

EPA's regulations in the Code of Federal Regulations (40 CFR) define four hazardous waste characteristic properties: ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity, or toxicity (see 40 CFR 261.21- 261.24).

Labels are the diamond-shaped warning placards meant to convey the associated hazard of the contained waste by the DOT. Examples include “flammable liquid”, “poison”, and “corrosive”. (Learn more about Hazmat Placards)

EPA's regulations in the Code of Federal Regulations define four hazardous waste characteristic properties: ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity, or toxicity (see 40 CFR 261.21-261.24).

The hazardous waste categories include acutely hazardous waste, extremely hazardous waste, non-RCRA hazardous waste, RCRA hazardous waste, special waste and universal waste.

Each item on RCRA listing is noted with a letter(s) which designates the hazard or reason why the waste was listed: I = ignitable waste. C = corrosive waste. R = reactive waste. E = toxicity characteristic waste. H = acute hazardous waste. T = toxic waste.

Labels must specify the words "Hazardous Waste"; the composition and physical state of the waste; the hazardous properties of the waste (e.g., flammable, reactive, etc.); and the name and address of the generator. Labeled with the date that the waste accumulation began on each tank or container.

Therefore, the first step in the hazardous waste identification process is determining if a material is a solid waste. The second step in this process examines whether or not the waste is specifically excluded from regulation as a solid or hazardous waste.
