Inheritance tax filers can track the status of their return through myPATH by clicking on the Track My Inheritance Tax Return link. To track the status of a return, a user will need the Decedent's Last Name, the Decedent's SSN, and know whether the decedent was a PA resident.

Out-Of-State Real Estate Is Not Taxed for Pa. Inheritance Tax purposes. Ironically, if the decedent owned a property in Stone Harbor, New Jersey or anywhere outside Pennsylvania, it is not taxed for Pa.

An inheritance tax return must be filed for every decedent (or person who died) with property that may be subject to PA inheritance tax. The tax is due within nine months of the decedent's death. After nine months, the tax due accrues interest and penalties.

How do I get an extension to file my PA Income Tax return? If you need more time to prepare your taxes than the deadline permits, you may file for an extension of time by completing an "Application for Extension of Time to File" REV-276 .

An interest and penalty calculator is available at .doreservices.state.pa.us. The tax imposed, together with any in- terest thereon, constitute a lien upon real property, which remains in effect until the tax and interest are paid in full. There is no statute of limitations for col- lection of inheritance tax.

Inheritance tax returns are due nine calendar months after a person's death. The responsible party is the person named in the will as executor or, if the person dies without a will, the individual who is approved as administrator by the register of wills after a petition is filed.

One way to avoid inheritance tax in PA is to make an asset joint. For example, if you have $30,000 in your name alone, and through your will, you give it to a friend of yours, it would be taxed at 15% or they would owe $4,500 in taxes.

Interest on overdue inheritance tax is charged nine months and one day from the date of death, to the date of payment. Interest rates are detailed in form REV-1611, available at .revenue.pa.gov. An online interest and penalty calculator is also available on the department's online portal, mypath.pa.gov.
