The Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS) is a questionnaire containing 20 questions about a person's ability to perform everyday tasks. The LEFS can be used by clinicians as a measure of patients' initial function, ongoing progress and outcome, as well as to set functional goals.

The LEFS rating scale categories are: (1) “extreme difficulty or unable to perform,” (2) “quite a bit of difficulty,” (3) “moderate difficulty,” (4) “a little bit of difficulty,” and (5) “no difficulty.” In addition, the participant could elect “not applicable” for any item; this response was recorded as missing data ...

Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS) Each item is scored on a 5-point scale from 0 to 4 point scale (0=extreme difficulty or unable to perform activity, 4=no difficulty). Total LEFS scores can vary from 0 to 80; higher scores represent higher levels of LE function.

LEFS score = SUM (points for all 20 activities) Interpretation: Minimum score: 0 Maximum score: 80 The lower the score the greater the disability. The Minimal Detectable Change (MDC) is 9 scale points. The Minimal clinically Important Difference (MCID) is 9 scale points.

The LEFT was initially designed to assess the injured athlete's ability to perform sport‐specific movement patterns. The LEFT test consists of eight agility drills (forward run, backward run, side shuffle, carioca, figure 8 run, 45º cuts, 90º cuts) performed on a diamond shaped course (Figure 1).

They found a mean LEFS score of 71, indicating a good result of their treatment. When less than 15% of the individuals have the minimum score, no floor effect is present, and when less than 15% reach the maximum score, there is no ceiling effect (McHorney and Tarlov 1995).
