What is the point of adopting a Highway?

The Caltrans Adopt-A-Highway Program provides an avenue for individuals, organizations, or businesses to help maintain sections of roadside within California's State Highway System. Groups have the option to participate as volunteers or to hire a maintenance service provider to perform the work on their behalf.

Adopt-a-Highway volunteers help create cleaner and more beautiful roadsides by removing litter, planting trees and flowers, clearing graffiti, and thinning overgrown vegetation, and also help prevent litter and other pollutants from entering state waterways through stormwater drains.

INDOT's Adopt-A-Highway program helps significantly reduce the roadside trash problem on Indiana's highways. The program coordinates with community groups that provide trash and litter pickup on one-mile long sections of non-interstate Hoosier highways.

Volunteer groups contract to "adopt" a one mile stretch of road and commit to performing 4 clean-ups per year within that 1-mile segment. For more information contact the IRC Traffic Engineering (772) 226-1637 or traffic@ircgov.com.

The take rate is pretty solid. TxDOT says about 8% of the state's roads—some 6,800 miles—are cleaned up by Adopt-a-Highway volunteers in roughly 3,400 different groups. The program saves the state some $5 million in highway maintenance costs each year, per the Tyler Morning Telegraph.
