Terrigenous sediments form from sediments carried from the land into the ocean by water, wind or ice. Biogenous sediments contain at least 30 percent material from once-living marine organisms, especially plankton. Hydrogenous sediments form when dissolved minerals precipitate or solidify from seawater.

In the very, very deep ocean (deeper than 4 to 5 kilometers) all the calcium carbonate dissolves away, and the oozes cannot accumulate there. This is because the deep old waters there contain excess dissolved carbon dioxide which makes them slightly acidic (lower pH).

marine sediment, any deposit of insoluble material, primarily rock and soil particles, transported from land areas to the ocean by wind, ice, and rivers, as well as the remains of marine organisms, products of submarine volcanism, chemical precipitates from seawater, and materials from outer space (e.g., meteorites) ...

Biogenous sediments are composed of the remains of marine organisms. Hydrogenous sediments are formed when materials that are dissolved in water precipitate out and form solid particles. Cosmogenous sediments are derived from extraterrestrial sources.

Biogenous sediments (bio = life, generare = to produce) are sediments made from the skeletal remains of once-living organisms. These hard parts include a wide variety of particles such as shells of microscopic organisms (called tests), coral fragments, sea urchin spines, and pieces of mollusc shells.

There are three kinds of sea floor sediment: terrigenous, pelagic, and hydrogenous.

Chemical sedimentary rocks can be found in many places, from the ocean to deserts to caves. For instance, most limestone forms at the bottom of the ocean from the precipitation of calcium carbonate and the remains of marine animals with shells.

There are four kinds of marine sediments, Lithogenous, biogenous, hydrogenous and cosmogenous. Lithogenous are from the land, they form through the weathering process and are composed of small particles from weathered rock and volcanic activity.
