ZIP Codes are numbered with the first digit representing a certain group of U.S. states, the second and third digits together representing a region in that group (or perhaps a large city) and the fourth and fifth digits representing a group of delivery addresses within that region.

The current postal codes in the United States range from 00001 – 99950. The lowest and highest of these postal codes are both specific to areas in Alaska; The 00001 code is for the N Dillingham area, and the postal code 99950 is for Ketchikan, AK.

Unique ZIP codes generally are used by large organizations, government buildings, universities or large medical facilities. For these cases, the USPS would drop off all the mail at one single location, and then the mail recipients would distribute it to the necessary parties internally.

The correct format for a numeric ZIP+4 code is five digits, a hyphen, and four digits. The first five digits represent the 5-digit ZIP Code; the sixth and seventh digits (the first two after the hyphen) identify an area known as a sector; the eighth and ninth digits identify a smaller area known as a segment.

So what do the extra numbers mean? These last 4 digits represent specific delivery routes within delivery areas. This extra detail means an even more precise matching to a more granular level. It could represent a handful of houses on one side of a street, or even a single building that receives a high volume of mail.

In 1983, the zip + 4 format we now use (e.g., 60601-1635) was introduced to support delivery to densely populated areas. The first three digits before the hyphen identify the sectional center or large city. The second two classify the post office facility or delivery area.

So what do the extra numbers mean? These last 4 digits represent specific delivery routes within delivery areas. This extra detail means an even more precise matching to a more granular level. Once it gets sorted there, it will either get looked up to find the correct zip code and be sent to the correct location. Or it may get stamped “Undelivered” and the item will be returned to sender.

First of all, ZIP codes do not generally correspond to city and town boundaries, so having a ZIP code associated with a city is no guarantee that an address is actually located in that city. Second of all, ZIP codes actually have multiple names associated with them.
