If you are between the ages of 21-65, you should receive a Pap smear every three years. If you are between the ages of 30-65, you should receive a Pap smear in combination with HPV testing every five years.

What's New? The major change in the current recommendation is that the USPSTF now recommends screening every five years with high-risk HPV testing (hrHPV) alone as an alternative to screening every three years with Pap testing alone among women aged 30 to 65 years.

An annual Pap smear was the recommended guideline for many years. New cervical cancer guidelines were released by the United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) on March 14, 2012.

Women who are 21 to 29 should have a Pap test alone every 3 years. HPV testing alone can be considered for women who are 25 to 29, but Pap tests are preferred. Women who are 30 to 65 have three options for testing. They can have a Pap test and an HPV test (co-testing) every 5 years.

ACS recommends cervical cancer screening with an HPV test alone every 5 years for everyone with a cervix from age 25 until age 65. If HPV testing alone is not available, people can get screened with an HPV/Pap cotest every 5 years or a Pap test every 3 years.

The WHO has recommended a minimum requirement of one (1) adequate smear per lifetime in women older than 35 years of age. three (3) smears per lifetime, with a 10-year interval between each smear, commencing at not earlier than age 30 years. A referral system to be in place.

In 2012, national organizations published guidelines embracing longer screening intervals and a later age to start screening (10, 11). Co-testing with cytology and HPV testing at 5-year intervals is now the preferred or acceptable strategy for cervical cancer screening for women aged 30Y64 years (10, 11).

Women aged 21-29 years should only receive a Pap test to screen for cervical cancer. Women aged 30-65 years have three available options for cervical cancer screening: Pap testing alone, HPV testing alone, and HPV and Pap testing together.
