All enlisted military members agree to an initial eight-year military service obligation at the time they take their oath. Example: If a member served four years on active duty and separates, they are required to complete the remaining four years in the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR).

An enlisted service member's IRR service ends after the completion of their mandatory service obligation (MSO), usually eight years. In the case of military retired personnel they can be recalled to active service up to age 60 if they had completed more than 20 years on active duty and are physically capable.

Inactive Ready Reserve For The Army The Army's IRR is made up of “trained individuals who have previously served in the Active Army or Selected Reserve” and who need to meet their MSO commitment. Army troops who have completed the MSO requirement can elect to remain on IRR status if they are eligible.

Individuals assigned to the IRR receive no pay and are not obligated to drill, conduct annual training, or participate in any military activities (except for periodic Muster activities) until ordered by Presidential Authority. Individuals who are assigned to an "Inactive Status" are entitled to limited benefits.

After two years as a full-time Soldier, individuals are required to serve an additional two years part-time in the Army Reserve, working with a local unit one weekend a month with a two-week training one time a year.

As a federal warrant is issued for your arrest once you are AWOL more than 30 days, you could be arrested at any time. If this occurs, you will be held in a local jail until you are transferred to a military jail, where you will remain until you have a military court date, which could take some time.

The IRR consists of trained individuals who have previously served in the Active Army or Selected Reserve. It is comprised primarily of Soldiers who need to fulfill their Military Service Obligation (MSO) under Section 651 of Title 10 USC.

Reservists can quit earlier if they present an acceptable justification for leaving. Otherwise, quitting by failing to appear for training sessions affects future retirement benefits.
