  6. Multiply Line 4f by 5% (.05) to find Line 4g. Compare Lines 3 and 4g, and write the lesser amount on Line 5. Then, subtract Line 5 from Line 3 for Line 6.
  7. For Section B - K-12 Education Expense Credit, you will need to complete the K-12 Education Expense Credit Worksheet on the back of the schedule. Write the total amount of K-12 education expenses in Line 7a, excluding the first $250 paid.
  8. Subtract Line 7b from Line 7a. If the result is negative, enter 'zero' in Line 7c and then multiply this by 25% (.25) in Line 7d. Finally, compare Lines 6 and 7d, and write the lesser amount in Line 8.
  9. Add Lines 5 and 8 in Section C to determine your total nonrefundable credit amount, and write this amount on Form IL-1040, Line 17.
  10. To figure your refundable credit for Earned Income Credit, write the amount of federal EIC from your U.S. 1040, Line 64a in Line 10a, and then multiply it by 5% (.05) in Line 10b.
  11. If you are an Illinois resident, write '1.0' in Line 10c. If you are a nonresident or part-year resident, write the decimal from Schedule-NR, Line 48. Multiply Line 10b by the decimal in Line 10c to find Line 10d, which you will write on Form IL-1040, Line 28.
  12. Complete the additional information for each qualifying student in Lines 12a through 12j, including total tuition and associated education expenses.
  13. Finally, add the amounts for qualified education expenses and write this amount on both Line 13 of the worksheet and Step 2, Line 7a of the schedule.
