Use Schedule A (Form 940) to figure your annual Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA) tax for states that have a credit reduction on wages that are subject to the unemployment compensation laws.

So, the key difference between Form 940 and 941 is that Form 940 reports FUTA tax, which is paid entirely by the employer, whereas Form 941 reports withholding and shared taxes that are split between the employee and employer.

When and How Must You Deposit Your FUTA Tax? Although Form 940 covers a calendar year, you may have to deposit your FUTA tax before you file your return. If your FUTA tax liability is more than $500 for the calendar year, you must deposit at least one quarterly payment.

Deposits for FUTA Tax (Form 940) are required for the quarter within which the tax due exceeds $500. The tax must be deposited by the end of the month following the end of the quarter. You must use electronic funds transfer (EFTPS) to make all federal tax deposits.

You owe FUTA tax on the first $7,000 you pay to each employee during the calendar year after subtracting any payments exempt from FUTA tax. The FUTA tax is 6.0% (0.060) for 2018. Most employers receive a maximum credit of up to 5.4% (0.054) against this FUTA tax.

The FUTA tax is 6.0% (0.060) for 2018. Most employers receive a maximum credit of up to 5.4% (0.054) against this FUTA tax. Every quarter, you must figure how much of the first $7,000 of each employee's annual wages you paid during that quarter.

To avoid a penalty, make your payment with your 2018 Form 940 only if your FUTA tax for the fourth quarter (plus any undeposited amounts from earlier quarters) is $500 or less. If your total FUTA tax after adjustments (Form 940, line 12) is more than $500, you must make deposits by electronic funds transfer.
