WHISTLE (OR FLAGEOLET) REGISTER The whistle register, (typically occurring between C6 and D7), is the highest register of the human voice, and refers to the register above the head register in female voices.

The higher register in the voice is known as head voice, which consists of a bright tone that is focused on resonance in bones and cavities of your face and head. Since this register is rarely used in speech, it is often the most difficult for many beginning singers, and requires lots of work.

Classical. We often think of classical as one of the most difficult and restrictive styles of singing, but if you really listen to classical singers, you will notice the opposite. They are using uncontrolled vibrato, which requires total emotional release and freedom.

Alto: An alto is the classic low range for a female singer, although some male voices naturally slot as altos. Most trained altos can comfortably sing from G3 in their lower range to F5 in their upper range.

What is a countertenor? A countertenor is a male singer who can sing as high as a soprano or mezzo-soprano. The countertenor is the rarest of all voice types.

Let's define “register break” as those few transitional notes that crossover from your lower to your upper range where your voice suddenly cracks, becomes weak or is difficult to control. In classical voice training, this is called the “passage” or passagio (a passageway between two sections of vocal range).

Low notes come from the slackening and thickening of the vocal cords. These thick vocal folds vibrate more slowly creating a lower pitch. But to really understand low notes in music and what makes them a bit difficult to sing well, let's briefly discuss the vocal cords.

Baritone vocal ranges, F2 - G4, are mid-range for male voices.
