Federal, state and local governments may issue taxpayers Form 1099-G for certain types of government payments. While there are a handful of purposes for this form, it's most commonly used for two payment types: unemployment compensation. state or local income tax refunds, credits or offsets.

Form 1099G is a record of the total taxable income the California Employment Development Department (EDD) issued you in a calendar year, and is reported to the IRS. You will receive a Form 1099G if you collected unemployment compensation from us and must report it on your federal tax return as income.

For all unemployment claimants that received benefits in 2022, the 1099-G form is now available on UI Online. Claimants will also receive a copy by mail. The form will show the amount of unemployment compensation you received during 2022, and any federal and state income tax withheld.

Form 1099-G is a report of income you received from the Department of Revenue during the calendar year. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires government agencies to report to the IRS certain payments made during the year because those payments are considered gross income to the recipient.

Taxable Refunds, Credits or Offsets of State or Local Income Taxes. If you receive a refund of (or credit for) state or local income taxes in a year after the year in which you paid them, you may have to include the refund in income in the year you receive it.
