Contact support

When a child accumulates five unexcused absences, a school official is compelled by §22.1-258 of the Code of Virginia to attempt to have direct contact with the student's parent or guardian to determine whether the parent is knowledgeable of the absences and jointly develop a plan to minimize further absenteeism.

When total absences for a student (excused and unexcused) exceeds 10 days per semester, further documentation may be required (health care practitioner's statement, court documentation, etc.).

Permission statement: I, (space for parent or guardian's name), give permission for my child, (space for child's name), to attend the field trip to (location of field trip) with (organization or adult's name who is leading the trip). List of any relevant allergies or medical conditions. Emergency contact information.

There are no school closings to report at this time.

Students who accumulate five or more unexcused absences, or who miss two or more periods unexcused in at least five days in a school year, will receive written notification of such absences.

Children between six and 16 who are not at school during a normal school day -- provided they are not at home with an illness or otherwise excused -- are considered truant. Truant children may be placed in the temporary custody of the police and may be processed in juvenile court.

Do I have to attend school? In Virginia, every child between the ages of five and 17 is required by law to attend school. Parents may choose to cause their children to attend a public, private, denominational, or parochial school. If certain requirements are met, parents may also teach their children at home.
