Confined compression testing measures the capacity of a material to withstand axial compressive loads without expanding perpendicularly to the force. Confined compression tests are usually performed on biphasic materials (one phase being liquid) (e.g. poroelastic materials).

The compressive strength of the confined concrete could be inferred from looking at Figure 5.11, finding that f′cc = 1.65*30 = 49.5 MPa (dotted line in the figure). An example of the geometric nonlinearity behavior of a structure is reported in Figure 5.14.

It is investigated that in column confined with jacketed specimens shows increase in load carrying capacity and ductility performance. The external confinement using ferrocement resulted in enhanced stiffness, ductility, and strength and energy dissipation capacity.

From the beginning, unconfined condition under compressive load give the low compressive strength and failed due to early crack initation. Confined condition is proposed to give material supporting to prevent brittle collapse and will give more strength.

The compressive strength of normal concrete varies between 25 and 50 MPa. Above this level, the term High Performance Concrete is used.

(1) The confinement factor was verified as the key parameter for the axial load carrying capacity. Basically, a larger confinement factor gave smaller post-peak axial strength decrease and larger ductility. With the similar confinement factor, the low-strength concrete exhibited less strength decrease.

Confinement in concrete is achieved by the suitable placement of transverse reinforcement. This results in a significant increase in the strength and ductility of concrete.

The confined compressive strength is the rock's strength while it is subjected to pressure in a confined medium. Rocks exhibit a strengthening effect (called the confinement effect) while under pressure. Generally, the deeper the rock, the greater the effect.
