Letter of casual conversion This letter is to inform you that as of <insert date> you have been employed on a casual basis by <insert company/partnership/sole trader name and the trading name of business> (the employer) on a regular and systematic basis for 6 months.

An eligible casual employee (except if they are employed by a small business employer) can make a request to convert to permanent employment from 21 days after their 12 month anniversary.

The notice period starts the day after you tell your workplace you want to end your employment, and ends on your last working day. Casual employees do not have to give notice. However, you may consider giving notice as a matter of courtesy, especially if you will be relying on a reference from the employer.

They can expect to work regular hours each week. They are also entitled to paid leave and must give or receive notice to end the employment.

A casual worker can also work for fixed hours for a short-term contract, but the contract must be for less than one year to fit the “casual” criteria. Don't get confused: if a casual worker works in an ongoing, regular pattern, that makes them a permanent part-time employee.

Consider notifying the employee of the proposed reason for termination and giving them a reasonable opportunity, either in person or in writing, to respond to it. Is any notice payable?
